Frequently Asked Questions
We know that treveling to Africa, especially if it is your first time you might have plenty of questions. We have tried to answer as many of them as possible.
All about Safaris (13)
Anytime is a wonderful time to be on Safari. April tends to be rainy, but for the more adventurous travelers, we can arrange a private trip for you during that time. At Africa Safari Agency we adjust our safari itineraries to take advantage of the best possible game viewing in accordance with seasonal concentrations of wildlife.
Tanzania is home to over 35 species of large mammals and has over 1,000 species of birds. On a typical safari in northern Tanzania you can expect to see elephant, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, warthog, baboon, monkeys and variety of the grazing mammals such as wildebeest, hartebeest, impala and gazelle, Most people see lion and hyena, and possibly cheetah or leopard.
In Ngorongoro Crater you may see one or more of the few remaining black rhino to be found in Tanzania, in addition to bull elephant, lion, gazelle, hyena, wildebeest, African buffalo and more. You’ll undoubtedly also see several different species of mongoose, ostrich, hyrax and other smaller animals. If you’re lucky you’ll see one or more of the smaller cats, foxes, wild dog or the more reticent antelope like lesser kudu, bushbuck, oryx or eland.
Many have heard of the Great Migration of the Serengeti, where millions of wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle and zebra traverse the plains is search of food and water. But how many of us know the real story?
At Africa Safari Agency, we believe in setting the right expectations. There’s so much more to safari than the migration! There’s more wildlife, culture and beautiful scenery than you can imagine, and with new animal species still being discovered, who knows what exciting sightings you’ll make.
We think an informed traveler is a happy traveler, so here are some important facts about the Migration that you may want to know.
Safari dress is comfortable and casual – layers are recommended. Keep it simple and bring things you don’t mind getting dusty. After you have booked your safari, we will send you a pre-departure information booklet including a detailed packing list to help you prepare for your safari.
This is simply not true. Mother nature offers no guarantees, to anyone ever. But don’t worry! You will definitely see examples of all the animals that comprise the: great migration” including, wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle, they may not be necessarily be part of the Great Migration of the Serengeti (for example, at Ngorongoro Crater the herds are mostly non-migratory). Both the species and the numbersmay vary widely from one location to another and from one time of year to another.
Still, having said all that, it is true that on one of our safaris you may very likely to see some part of migration. You may not see that dramatic river crossing (few people ever do), but you will likely see varying sized groups of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelle as they graze, play and gather on the plains.
While we can do our best to reference historical patterns, study weather trends and stay in touch with a superior team of guides out in the bush, no one can predict with any real certainty where the great herds will be. When was the last time you were able to accurately predict the rainfall totals and regional location of rain within your own country?
Is it true that the Great Migration consists of vast herds crossing rivers, dodging crocodiles and making death-defying escapes as they flee?
Well, yes that does happen, and, yes, it is quite dramatic as what you’ve seen on the television. The reality, however, is as much about luck as it is about patience. In order to get that kind of footage, a film crew positions themselves for weeks or months in one spot, waiting patiently for these bursts of absolutely astounding activity. On safari, it is much more likely that you’ll see varying sizes of herds grazing quietly on the plains.
First of all, it’s important to understand that Serengeti National Park is the size of Connecticut, and the much larger Serengeti eco-system spans far beyond the park’s borders. It includes not only the park itself (6,00 square miles!), but Kenya’s Maasai Mara (600 square miles), parts of the neighboring Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and beyond.
Then you must consider the wildebeest. While they tend to travel in herds, they are not joined at the hip! Groups of wildebeest may range from 10 to 100 or 100,000 individuals, and these can be spread over miles and miles. Sometimes, you may see what appears to be a single-file line of wildebeest that spans the horizon.
Other times you may see clusters of smaller herds here and there. And, yes, sometimes you may even be lucky enough to see the massive herds that turn the gassy plains into a vast tapestry of ungulates.
Finally, understand that the reason the National Park is so rich with wildlife is because the land is so highly protected. Keeping as much of the landscape as possible in pristine condition means limiting the roads within the park. There are vast swaths that are –wonderfully – ONLY accessible to the wildlife.
Taking these facts into consideration, Africa Safari Agency will arrange expert guides with rugged, customized vehicles to take you as close as possible to the wildlife – with the most up to date information from the bush and without any mileage restrictions.
Our scheduled safari varies in size depending on the nature of the safari, family departures being slightly larger to accommodate for kids and grandkids. On typical sold out trip, we may use 3 or 4 customized Land Cruisers, guaranteeing everyone a window seat, and allowing for a more intimate connection with the African bush.
It’s actually a year-around phenomenon. The simple story is that these vast herds are on a continual search for food and water and spend the entire year moving in a more-or-less clockwise direction around the Serengeti eco-system.
Weather, specifically rain, is the driving force of migration, so any change in the seasonal weather patterns (more, less or no rain) has a huge impact on the location of the migration and the size of the herds.
Special dietary requirements such as vegetarian or diabetic meals can easily be arranged with advanced notice. If you are vegetarian or vegan you may wish to bring some alternative protein sources. If you have multiple food allergies, you’ll definitely want to bring along supplemental snacks. It is important we know of any possible dietary restrictions as soon as possible.

You’ll have a chance to deepen your understanding of cultural diversity, discover the miracles of nature, and at the same time play, laugh, and enjoy the pleasure of one another’s company. Our trips are well suited for children 7 years and older.
All about Tanzania (6)
Safari in Swahili, the language of East Africa, simply means “journey”. Today, the word is synonymous with a wildlife viewing adventure in the African bush.
If your primary reason of traveling to Africa is to experience an abundance of African wildlife in unspoiled wilderness, then Tanzania should be your destination of choice. Tanzania protects over 30% of its land through national parks and reserves, more than any other country on the continent. You simply cannot beat the wildlife concentrations found in Tanzania.
The parks and wildlife reserves of Tanzania are inhabited by vast herds of wildebeest spread out across the Serengeti savannah, huge populations of elephant and giraffe, as well as herds of plains game and along with their predators. All these animals interact and roam freely, the same as they have for thousands of years in their native habitat. Here you’ll witness an incredible diversity of ecology and will find the tropical vegetation and vast array of bird life as fascinating as the big game.
Tanzania is home to 90% of the film series produced on African animals. Tanzania also boasts a remarkable number of World Heritage Sites including the Serengeti National Park, Kilimanjaro National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation area, Selous Game Reserve (this reserve is the size of Denmark) and the KilwaKisiwani and the SongoMnara Ruins.
Most people have heard of the vast plains of the Serengeti, which hosts the annual migration of wildebeest and the predators that follow in its wake. In addition, the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater is famous for its wide array of wildlife dwelling on the crater floor. Tanzania offers other less famous but equally beautiful national parks depending on your specific interests and we will work with you to optimize your itinerary so that your experience is unforgettable.
Fresh vegetables, seafood and meats make it an exceptional culinary experience. Overall the food is excellent and you will find a good mix of international cuisine, African, Indian and European. All types of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks are sold in most international hotels/lodges. DO NOT drink tap water, bottled water is preferred and caps should be removed at the table.
Prices of beverages (depends on hotel/location):
Bottled water 1.5ltrl: 1 – 2 US$
Soft drinks: 1 US$
Beer: 1.5 – 2.5 US$
Glass of wine: 3 – 4US$
Most of East Africa is savannah, comparable to the high plateau, semi-desert areas of Colorado or New Mexico in the US. Altitude ranges from 3,000 to 7,000 feet (Kilimanjaro climbers will experience much higher altitudes). Temperatures during the day range from 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Nights are cool with temperature dipping as low as 40 in some areas for example: the Ngorongoro Crater.
Even though you will be traveling near the equator, please take our clothing recommendation seriously and bring a light jacket/ sweatshirt, sweater, and a fleece pullover for the temperature drops at night and bring something warm to sleep in at night. Humidity is low. The islands experience tropical weather and are generally hot/ humid during the day and warm at night, except during the rainy season when it is cool (but not cold).
Late March – late May: is traditionally the long rainy season. This period is considered the “winter period” in Tanzania.
June – late October: is the dry season, June, July and August can be very cold on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater. The islands are lovely at this time of the year; the evenings are cool (not cold) and the day time hot.
Late October – mid December: is when the short rains occur. This tends to be in the form of a daily thunderstorm. The Ngorongoro Crater rim has a wonderful climate at this time of year. The Serengeti and Lake Manyara are very warm and the Islands are very hot.
Mid December – March: is summer weather. It is dry and very warm until March. Due to its altitude Ngorongoro Crater is much cooler than elsewhere.
It is better to book as far in advance as possible to ensure availability at the time you wish to travel, especially during the peak seasons (June through August and Christmas time). This is especially important for those wishing to travel on private custom safaris and those adding extensions to the schedules trips.
All about Money Matters (5)
The number of people traveling in a group
Whether your in-country transportation is by bush plane or 4×4 vehicle
Whether you choose to stay in lodges or tented camps
How remote you want to go
Whether you want to view game from a mobile tented camp
Whether you want to participate in walking safaris that involve remote bush camps.
We can work with you to bring your safari within your budget range. Most of our trips are suggested itineraries, but you can vary them as you want. Let us know what your budget is and we will do our best to design a trip that gives you the experiences you want within the budget you set.
The unit of local currency is the Tanzania Shilling (Tsh). American dollars are acceptable in most places around town (Note: traveler checks are often not accepted). Credit cards are accepted only in big hotels, and if you do manage to find a place to use them there will usually be a surcharge of at least 5% Please do not bring US$ notes issued before 2003, as they are not accepted here!
In Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar there are ATM’s where you can get local currency with your visa or MasterCard.
You can book a suggested itinerary from our website. These trips offer the convenience of a pre-set itinerary, affordable, reasonable and competitive price, with flexible scheduling.
Our trips use tiered pricing based on logistics. Getting people into remote areas where the best game viewing exists is more costly when there are only two people in the safari vehicle (4×4), rather than four or five, the results in lower pricing for four or five people traveling together as opposed to pricing for a couple traveling alone. Also, the logistics of moving gear around for a walking safari with numerous bush camps is more complicated and more costly than a trip that involves simply staying at a lodge. Our pricing structure is tiered so you pay for the costs of your safari and don’t subsidize other groups.
Our trips have no hidden costs. We don’t quote you a low price and then tell you that, in addition you have to pay your park fees or in-country transportation is extra (when quoted in the itinerary). When we quote you a trip price it includes everything while you are in-country. The few items not included are gratuities, passports and visa fees, tips and beverages except for bottled water as noted in the itineraries.
